Italy has always been renowned for its food, beauty, and connection. Now, a new trend is blending all three: olive oil tourism. However, it is not about just tasting oil at a shop. It is more about walking the groves, picking the fruit, pressing the oil, and feeling the land. It is called ‘oleoturismo,’ and it is gaining popularity rapidly.

People aren’t just snapping photos of vineyards anymore. They are rolling up their sleeves in olive groves, joining the harvest, staying at oil-producing resorts, and booking tours that turn olive oil into a full-on experience. This is a lifestyle shift. And Italy, with its ancient trees and unmatched flavors, is leading the charge.

The Olive Harvest Experience

The most exciting time for olive oil enthusiasts is harvest season, which typically spans from September to November. This is when the groves come alive. Families, farmers, and now curious travelers all get involved.

Tours often end with a visit to a traditional frantoio where the olives are pressed. The oil is fresh, green, and peppery. It usually finishes with a picnic right in the grove, surrounded by nature and the people who made the harvest possible.

Some hotels turn this into a full experience. At Villa La Massa in Tuscany, guests get to pick olives, taste the just-pressed oil, and enjoy harvest-themed meals. Over in Puglia, Borgo Egnazia offers a “Golden Harvest” adventure where you learn straight from the experts.

Scenic Olive Oil Routes and Tours

Even outside the harvest season, olive oil tourism is alive and kicking. Italy has created entire routes, similar to wine roads, focused on olives and oil. These paths wind through hills, groves, and small towns where tradition is still very much alive.

One of the best-known is the Lago di Garda Olive Trail, which shows the northern side of Italy’s oil culture. Down south, Sicily’s Valley of the Temples mixes archaeology with olive trees that are hundreds of years old.

Plus, you can also tour with local experts. Italy Customized is one company offering deep-dive tours where you explore ancient olive trees, join aperitivo sessions focused on oil, or take a food journey across Chianti. Near Florence and Palermo, farms offer half-day tours where you press oil and enjoy it moments later on warm bread.

Luxury Resorts for Olive Oil Lovers

High-end resorts in Italy are catching on fast. Olive oil is no longer just in the kitchen. It is in the spa, in your cocktail, and on your skin. Some resorts even produce their own EVOO and build the entire guest experience around it.

Take Palazzo di Varignana in Emilia-Romagna. They make five unique olive oils and let you taste each one. You can dine across five restaurants where EVOO takes center stage, sip cocktails infused with oil, and then head to the spa for an olive oil ritual where your body gets brushed in liquid gold.

Down in Sicily, Verdura Resort uses oil from its massive organic farm across its restaurants and in cooking classes. Want to learn how to make perfect caponata? You will do it with their estate’s oil. It is local, fresh, and completely tied to the land you are standing on.

People are craving experiences that feel honest. Olive oil tourism gives them a chance to connect with land, tradition, and taste in a way that is simple but deeply satisfying.

Since 2021, there has been a 37% jump in olive oil-related travel across Italy. Locals are into it. Tourists are obsessed.
