Kate Winslet has lived through her share of red carpets, but few moments top the time she almost met King Charles in a completely sheer outfit. The Oscar-winning actress revisited the story during a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and she still tells it like it happened yesterday.
Winslet, now 50, explained that she first met King Charles almost 30 years ago at a major movie premiere.
At the time, she was only 20, fresh from her early success in "Sense and Sensibility". She admitted she did not think much about the royal greeting until it was far too late, which set up the chaotic scene that still makes her cringe and laugh at the same time.
The Premiere That Sparked the Panic
The story traces back to the 1996 royal premiere of "Sense and Sensibility". It was a huge event, packed with press, fans, and the kind of glamour that feels larger than life. Winslet chose a bold black lace jumpsuit for the night, and she remembered it as fully sheer. She said she loved the look at the time, but she completely forgot that she would be standing in a line to greet the then Prince of Wales.
Royal Family / IG / As King Charles, who is now 77, began walking her way, a thought hit her like a lightning bolt. The actress said her brain screamed, "Nipples, nipples, nipples, oh my God!"
She could not believe she had shown up to greet royalty in something that offered zero coverage. The panic spread fast, and she said it was one of those moments where your body gets warm with embarrassment before anything has even happened.
Luckily, she had one saving grace. A long black coat hung softly over her shoulders. Someone nearby saw the crisis before she even reacted and whispered "Coat!" with the urgency of a fire alarm. Winslet grabbed it, wrapped herself up like she was throwing on a magic cloak, and positioned herself just in time to say, "Your Majesty!" with a straight face.
Winslet's Close Ties With the Monarch
Fast forward almost 30 years, and Winslet now has an official connection to the royal family. She serves as an ambassador for The King's Foundation, one of King Charles's personal charities. It is a role she takes seriously, one that she finds meaningful. Still, even with experience and age on her side, she admitted that meeting him again came with its own brand of chaos.
Kate / IG / Kate Winslet has always been a force on screen, from "Titanic" to "Mare of Easttown."
She met King Charles most recently in June, alongside fellow actress Meryl Streep. Instead of a wardrobe malfunction, this time the panic was all about protocol. Winslet said she and Streep could not remember if they were supposed to curtsy. They talked about it the entire ride there, unsure if they were about to mess up in front of cameras and royal staff.
Winslet decided she should go first because, as she joked, someone has to get it wrong, and she is usually that person. The actress took the lead, walked up to the King, and did her best version of a proper curtsy. Ultimately, everything went smoothly. She said King Charles was warm, kind, and incredibly easy to talk to. Her nerves faded fast, replaced by the same respect she felt for him when she first met him decades ago.
